Every year, the University of Toronto selects only 37 students worldwide for the Lester B. Pearson Scholarship. Unlike other fully funded scholarships, you cannot apply directly.
Your secondary school must nominate you first. One school = one student per year.
This single rule disqualifies hundreds of brilliant Nigerian students every year. Not because they are not good enough, but because they hear about the nomination too late.
I helped two students from Federal Government College Port Harcourt apply in 2024. Both had eight As (Distinctions) in WAEC but failed because their school had never registered as a nominating school before. After speaking with a guidance counselor in Lagos who has successfully nominated three Pearson scholars, here is what I found out.

Eligibility: All countries including Nigeria must be in the final year of secondary school.
IELTS: Not required by scholarship, but you must meet University of Toronto English requirement (WAEC C6 in English is accepted for some programs)
Deadline: Oct 9 (Nomination), Oct 16 (University of Toronto application), Nov 6 (Scholarship application), 2026

This is genuinely fully funded. Not partial.
– Tuition: $61,000 CAD per year x 4 = $244,000 CAD that is #230,092,000 Covered.
– Residence + Meals: $18,000 CAD per year. Covered for 4 years. That is a total of $72,000 CAD/ #67,896,000
– Books + Incidental: $2,000 CAD/ #1,886,000. Covered.
Total value is over ₦299 Million at current rate. You don’t pay anything major.
Why Nigerian Schools Fail – The Real Problem
Pearson requires your principal to register your school on the University of Toronto portal before Oct 9, 2026.
I visited five secondary schools in Enugu State, Nigeria in August 2026: ( 1: community secondary Ihakpu Awka 2: Chosen foundation Academy Ihakpu Awka 3: Community secondary school itch 4: Boys secondary school Ovoko 5: Girls secondary school ibagwa)
– Three principals had never heard of Pearson
– one said “we only do JAMB”
– one asked me to bring a letter
If your school is not already registered, YOU have to push them. It is not a long process, registration takes 15 minutes on the University of Toronto website. But schools delay because students ask late.
Since Nigerian schools run on WAEC/NECO calendar, if you are in SS3 now writing WAEC in May/June 2026, tell your principal by July 2026, not October.

What Pearson Selectors Actually Want (Not Just 8 As)
37 scholars from thousands = <1% acceptance. 8 As in WAEC alone will not get you in.
From reviewing 2023, 2024, and 2025 African winners:
Weak profile (gets rejected): “I was class captain, head of debate, member of JETS club.”
Strong profile (gets selected): “I noticed JSS1 students in my school failed Basic Science. I started a peer tutoring group with 2 friends, taught 15 students every Saturday for 8 months, 11 of them moved from F to C. I wrote a handover note so SS2 students can continue after I graduate.”
Difference: Before and After + Numbers + Sustained effort.

How to Apply – 3 Steps Only
Step 1: Get Nominated (Do this in July)
Talk to the principal / guidance counselor. If they agree, they will register and nominate you on the University of Toronto portal by Oct 9, 2026.
Step 2: Apply to University of Toronto (By Oct 16)
Apply via OUAC (Ontario Universities’ Application Centre) . Apply to max 3 programs, but your Pearson application will be tied to your first choice. Don’t apply to Medicine if your WAEC is Commercial – you will be rejected.
Step 3: Complete Pearson Application (By Nov 6)
After Steps 1 and 2, University of Toronto will send you a private link to your email. That is the real scholarship application. You have about three weeks to complete essays.
What Documents to Prepare Now
– WAEC/NECO result or predicted result (signed by principal)
– Transcript from SS1 to SS3
– Record of 1-2 leadership activities with dates and numbers
– International passport (start now if you don’t have)
You don’t need a recommendation letter for Pearson initially – but prepare one from your principal just in case.
Final Check Before You Apply
This scholarship is not for university students. If you are already in the 100 level in Nigeria, you are not eligible. Only final year secondary school students can apply.
