It covers virtually every major expense associated with studying at Oxford, including tuition fees, living costs, travel expenses, visa fees, and health insurance.
The Rhodes Scholarship has funded outstanding students since 1902 and remains one of the most respected international scholarship programmes in the world.
However, many applicants either discover the opportunity too late or spend months preparing applications without fully understanding the eligibility requirements. This guide solves that problem. What Is the Rhodes West Africa Scholarship 2027?
The Rhodes Scholarship is widely regarded as the oldest and most celebrated international postgraduate scholarship in the world. Established under the Will of Cecil John Rhodes, it enables exceptional young people from around the globe to pursue postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.
The West Africa constituency covers twenty countries across the region. Successful candidates become part of a global network of Rhodes Scholars, many of whom have gone on to become presidents, judges, scientists, entrepreneurs, academics, and influential leaders in their respective fields.
For the 2027 intake, applications opened on 1 June 2026 and will close on 27 August 2026. Successful applicants will begin their studies at Oxford in October 2027.
The scholarship also operates alongside the Oxford-Morland-West Africa Graduate Scholarship, helping expand funding opportunities for selected West African scholars. No separate application is required for this arrangement.
Which Countries Are Eligible for the Rhodes West Africa Scholarship?
The Rhodes West Africa Scholarship is open to citizens of the following countries:
- Benin
- Burkina Faso
- Cabo Verde
- Gambia
- Ghana
- Guinea
- Guinea-Bissau
- Côte d’Ivoire
- Liberia
- Mali
- Mauritania
- Niger
- Nigeria
- Saint Helena (including Ascension and Tristan da Cunha)
- Senegal
- Sierra Leone
- São Tomé and Príncipe
- Togo
If your country is not listed above, you may still qualify through another Rhodes constituency. The Rhodes Trust provides an eligibility checker to help applicants determine the correct constituency.
There is also a provision known as inter-jurisdictional consideration for candidates who have strong ties to more than one Rhodes constituency but do not fully satisfy the nationality or residency requirements of a single constituency.

Who Can Apply? Full Eligibility Requirements
Meeting every eligibility requirement is essential. Failing to satisfy even one criterion may render an application ineligible, regardless of other achievements.
Nationality Requirement
Applicants must hold citizenship in one of the eligible West African countries listed above.
Dual nationals who qualify for multiple Rhodes constituencies should apply through the constituency with which they have the strongest connection.
Residency Requirement
Applicants must have lived in one or more eligible West African countries for at least five of the last ten years.
The five years do not need to be continuous. Therefore, applicants who have spent time abroad for study or work may still qualify if their total residency within West Africa reaches the required threshold.
Importantly, you do not need to be currently residing in West Africa to be eligible.
Age Requirements
The Rhodes Scholarship provides three possible age categories.
Standard Age Requirement
You must be between 18 and 24 years old on 1 October 2026.
This means you must have been born after 1 October 2001 and before 2 October 2008.
Professional Degree Extension
Applicants studying Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Law, or Engineering whose programmes require a professional internship before graduation may be up to 25 years old on 1 October 2026.
In this category, you must have been born after 1 October 2000.
Later Graduation Category
Applicants who completed their undergraduate degree later than the typical academic timeline may qualify under a third category.
You must:
- Be under 27 years old on 1 October 2026.
- Have completed your first undergraduate degree on or after 1 October 2025.
The Rhodes Trust generally uses the graduation date shown on your degree certificate.
Academic Achievement Requirements
Applicants must have completed, or be on track to complete, an undergraduate degree with First Class Honours or its equivalent by the application deadline.
For candidates in Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy, the highest academic classification awarded by their institution is considered equivalent to First Class.
Applicants from these fields are also expected to have achieved distinction-level performance in at least two of the following key subject areas:
- Medicine and Surgery
- Pathology
- Pharmacology
- Gynaecology
- Paediatrics
The Rhodes Trust notes that some applicants may strengthen their competitiveness for Oxford admission through additional academic study or qualifications. However, all candidates are assessed individually based on their overall academic record, leadership potential, and personal achievements.
English Language Requirements
Applicants must satisfy the University of Oxford’s English language requirements.
For many candidates, this means submitting approved English language test scores such as IELTS, in line with Oxford’s required standards.
However, applicants whose previous degree was taught and assessed entirely in English may be eligible to request an English language waiver.
To do this, candidates must submit a brief explanation demonstrating how they meet Oxford’s waiver criteria.
While IELTS is not always mandatory, meeting Oxford’s English language requirements is compulsory for all applicants.
Can I Apply If I Live Outside West Africa?
Yes.
Living outside West Africa does not automatically make you ineligible.
The residency requirement focuses on where you have lived during the previous ten years, not where you currently reside.
For example, a Nigerian student studying in Canada or a Ghanaian professional working in Germany may still qualify, provided they have lived in West Africa for at least five of the last ten years.
How Many Scholarships Are Available?
The West Africa constituency awards two Rhodes Scholarships each year.
Considering that the constituency covers twenty countries, competition is understandably intense.
The limited number of awards reflects the prestige of the programme and highlights the importance of submitting a well-prepared and highly competitive application.
One More Thing Before You Apply
The Rhodes Trust advises candidates to submit their Rhodes Scholarship application before applying directly to the University of Oxford.
If you are selected as a Rhodes Scholar, the Rhodes House team will guide you through Oxford’s graduate admissions process.
Applicants who are unsuccessful may reapply once, provided they still meet all eligibility requirements and apply through the same constituency.
Keep in mind that any valid application submitted before the deadline counts as one application attempt.
